Build the base first.

That’s what my friend Kamal kept telling me every time I got impatient on our runs.

I've known Kamal since 2003. We were at the same boarding school. I was in 12th, he was in 11th. He went on to serve as an officer in the Indian Army and later led trust and safety operations at Urban Company. This year, he spent three months with us in Hamburg, seeing firsthand how we build for regulated enterprises in Europe.

Like every runner friend, he eventually convinced me to start running. We ran three times a week and talked about everything along the way. A few weeks in, I wanted to go faster.

That’s when he explained the concept of Zone 2 training. Without a strong aerobic foundation, speed doesn't hold. You have to build the base to sustain the distance.

A few months later, I ran my first 10K. Today I'm comfortable calling myself a runner.
